International Institute of Business Studies, Airport Campus, Bengaluru, took students from the first semester PGDM, coordinated by Prof.Anilkumar.R, Head, Management Skill Development and Research Centre, to Akshaya Patra on 3rd December 2021, as part of its ongoing efforts to integrate theoretical concepts with practical experiences. The factory was visited by a total of 50 students with Prof.Anil Kumar. R.
The Akshaya Patra Foundation is an Indian not-for-profit organisation based in Bengaluru. The Foundation's Mid-Day Meal Program aims to eliminate classroom hunger. It provides nutritious meals to children enrolled in public and state-aided schools. Additionally, Akshaya Patra aims to combat malnutrition and advocate for the right to education of children from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The objective of the Industry Visit to Akshaya Patra Foundation Factory:
1. To provide students with an understanding of how an organisation such as Akshaya Patra operates.
2. To educate students about the various technological challenges that the food industry is currently confronted with.
3. To increase students' management knowledge.
How Akshaya Patra was started: His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada observed a group of children fighting with stray dogs over scraps of food one day while looking out a window in Mayapur, a village near Calcutta. This simple, yet heartbreaking incident inspired a commitment to ensure that no child within a ten-mile radius of the centre goes hungry.
IIBS Students understanding the production process at Akshaya Patra
Every day, the kitchen begins operation at approximately 5.30 a.m. We arrived at around 5.30 a.m. with the intention of learning about the automated cooking process used in mass production. The Akshaya Patra Foundation's officials greeted us with open arms. Mr Uday, Operations Manager, briefed us on their organisation, their mission, and how they have been constantly striving to achieve it. The tour was about to begin, and prior to entering the area, we were given shoe and hair covers to wear.
The kitchen is designed in such a way that it takes advantage of gravity. It is three stories tall. The rice, dal, and vegetables are washed on the top floor and then passed through a channel to the second floor, where they are cooked in massive capacity drums. Additionally, all of the spices used to cook the vegetables and dal are poured from above.
A few important points learned by students during the visit to Akshay Patra were:
- Most employees are uninformed, so are taught methods of maintaining hygiene in the kitchen and time management.
- To manage traffic in order to arrive at your destination on time, use Google Maps to find the most convenient and shortest route and send vehicles based on that analysis and avoidance of routes with the most traffic signals.
- Transferring employees to other Akshaya Patra locations/branches is occasionally necessary, but it is largely dependent on the requirement.
To manage/retain employees: in addition to their salary, they receive additional benefits such as education for their children, medical assistance, and financial assistance for marriage. These enable them to maintain a connection with the organisation.
Akshaya Patra is funded by various corporate giants such as Tata, Infosys, the government, and various other industries. Interest earned on these deposits is reinvested in development. After five years of service, the principal must be returned. To accomplish this, we are establishing Akshaya Nidhi, a subsidiary of Akshaya Patra. It operates a canteen and earns revenue by providing meals to various corporations and other organisations
